Get the Look - Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead Sugar Skull Makeup Tutorial

Updated 03/05/2011 & 03/06/2011

This is strictly my own personal opinion about the matter. All material uncovered was done through a public google internet search with a few different keyword entries.

Due to information uncovered and revealed about this company, I cannot in good conscience or good faith recommend anyone support this reportedly handmade, organic small business. If information had been disclosed prior to discovery by the shop owner herself, I would have no problem with continuing to purchase. Regretfully, the scope of the lie and how many different people it could have potentially affected and hurt leaves me no other choice than to say this is not an honest company to do business with.

Happy almost Halloween! Tis the Eve of All Hallows Eve, if you want to get technical about it!

This is my favorite time of year- the pumpkins, apple cider, donuts, pies and crisps, crisp fall wind, brightly colored leaves... And little ghouls and goblins running around from door to door Trick-or-Treating for free candy! To me, Autumn can't possibly get any better than this!

This look intimidated me. The first time I attempted it, I hated it. My problem was I didn't have a fine enough brush to do the detail work. So, I waited until I did. This time around- I am in LOVE with this look. Many thanks goes out to Brandalyn who originally requested this look through my facebook page. I did a little research, and boy did I turn up some amazing artists who create sugar skulls. And of course- I found some people who threw on some white face paint, blacked out their eyes nose, and drew on a mouth... And called it  a sugar skull. Uhhh, no. I don't think so. Not quite.

My biggest inspiration for doing this look was Sylvia Ji. She's an absolutely amazing artist, and the illustrations she creates- many of them I wish I could wallpaper my walls with. I know that's a little creepy- but, I'm not exactly normal. It fits. I may just get some prints soon and hang those in various locations.

Anyways, first I'll give you the cosmetics list of everything that's on my face:

Nivea Soft moisturizing cream.
Professional Cream Makeup in white- I started out with the smudge proof one, then changed to the plain one. (you get what you pay for, and I don't like this stuff... Either of them)
E.L.F. High Definition Powder
Wet 'N Wild Kohl Eyeliner in Black
E.L.F. Black Cream Eyeshadow- Licorice duo
Orglamix Mineral Eye Shadow in Midnight
Wet 'N Wild Gel Eyeliner in Black
Moi Minerals Mineral Eye Shadows in Dark Amethyst, Rockstar Red, True Gold and Dark Emerald
Wet 'N Wild Glitter Eyeliner in Silver

That's it. And while it doesn't seem like a long list- the thing that's "difficult" is the amount of time it takes to draw this face. Make SURE you set aside at the bare minimum an hour to do your face. The more detail, the more time it will take. Total for me was just under 3 hours. I'm a nitpicker. And I had to remove the cream makeup from my face TWICE before I could start- because the no-smudge stuff I told you to use sucked. I'm not a fan of having a pale face, with splotches, streaks and some areas caked on heavier than others. But finally, after some profanity laced fits... My face was white.

The rest of the video shows how to draw your skull face. Be creative- there are literally a million different ways the Sugar Skull designs can come out- the possibilities are limitless. You can use more color, you can use less, you can get very detailed with design, or keep it quick and simple.

I hope you all enjoy this tutorial and can't wait to see pictures of Halloween Costumes! And if you'd like to donate some Reeses PB Cups to my Trick-or-Treat fund, I'd be eternally grateful. I can't walk- so I can't go collect free candy!!!

Creepies and laughs always, xoxox ~*SP

Using a grand total of three (yes, only three!) shades in my ever expanding collection of makeup.... I created Foxy Eyes! It's easy to put together, and done quickly! The reason the vid takes so long is because, as we are ALL well aware, I like to gab!

Get the Look - The Dark Carnival Harlequin Clown

I'm terrified of clowns. As in, I see one, and a full blown panic attack starts to well up inside me.... And if it gets real bad, or I'm surprised by one "friendly" one even- I'll faint. It's not fun. This terror stems from one of my Uncles actually listening to me as a 6 year old when I said I wanted to watch "a scary movie!!". I didn't think he'd take it so seriously.... Since my idea was along the lines of Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. You know- because The Evil Queen and Maleficent are two scary women!

What does my Uncle do? He makes us some popcorn. Snuggles me into a blanket on the couch, and pops in "Stephen King's: The It". I will never, ever, ever get over that terror. Sheesh... Writing this is giving me the chills. Seems strange that I dressed up as a full blown clown for a High School drama production though.... I couldn't see anything but my red nose on my face. And I did my best to ignore my cast-mates so I wouldn't s**t my pants. It was a Dr. Seuss production- why were dressed as clowns, I have no clue.

There is one type I can handle. Well, two technically. Is a mime a clown? Well, I digress. Harlequin clowns are pretty- and remind me more of jesters than my nightmare red-nosed, white face painted and freaky terrors. Harlequins are silly- funny, musical, and generally there for a laugh. This look- I had immense fun creating. Something dark and gothic for Halloween, but also a hint of playful in there.

The important thing to remember is to use gel eyeliner. This will give you the darkest coverage for the swirls on your face- a kohl eyeliner can be used, but the lines and points won't be so sharp and precise. In addition to a flat eyeliner brush (as opposed to an angled one), you can also pick up the color with a very fine artists brush.

Now for the rundown of what's on my face:

E.L.F. Complexion Perfection (to even out redness and colored undertones)
E.L.F. Concealer- under eyes, and over blemishes
Physicians Formula: Organics Mineral Foundation in Translucent
E.L.F. High Definition Powder (matte finish to face)

What's on my Eyes:
Orglamix Cosmetics Mineral Eye Shadows

A black creme shadow all over lid
Midnight, Cranberry and Vanilla Birthday Cake for lids and shading
Cranberry also layered onto cheeks for blush and contouring

Wet 'N Wild Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Black
WNW Gel Eyeliner in Black
WNW MegaLength Mascara in Black
WNW Silver Glitter Eyeliner (outlined entire eye, over black)

Glitter tipped false lashes

Lips:

E.L.F. Waterproof Eyeliner Pen to outline
WNW Kohl Eyeliner in Black and blended
E.L.F. Minty Lip Gloss in New York

There you have it!
Have a wickedly good Halloween ghouls!

Thanks for stopping by!

WOAH ladies- I definitely creeped out this one! These white contacts are freaaaa-ky! I was definitely having a lot of fun putting this look together- and while I thought I was filming a fantastic video....

I was horribly let down. Heartbroken.
Ok, well, admittedly not that bent out of shape- but not entirely too happy that my video ended up with me looking like an Oompa-Loompa. Yep, ORANGE. I don't know how the heck I managed it- considering I had very pale face makeup on which was pretty white. Orange!? I guess I really screwed up the white that one. [pouts]

Luckily for me, I took quite a few pictures of this one. I think my hair looks awful... Honestly, I just didn't know what I wanted to do with it. Meh. It happens I suppose. I went ahead and just did a slideshow of the pictures I had taken, and put text in on how to apply the makeup....

I hope it was easy to follow along to and understand!

As for all the cosmetics, there was quite a bit.

For the makeup base on my face, essentially I took equal parts of white smudge-proof face paint I picked up at Spirit Halloween Store, a pale foundation I have, and 2-3 times those amounts of a good face cream moisturizer. I used Nivea Soft, which comes in a big white tub, and mixed the three different mediums together on the top of a tupperware lid. You can use a plate, or any flat non-porus surface. Once the colors are evenly blended, pick some up on your fingers and rub the mixture onto your face everywhere. Make sure to get a little on your eyelids, into the corners of your nose, and into your hairline. This will look streaky at first. Basically- we want the face done first.

Taking a wedged cosmetic sponge, stipple the makeup into your skin. Basically- lightly holding the sponge, press in and slightly twist to really work the color into your skin. This will give you a flawless finish. Work through this rather quickly- because the white face paint dries quickly. The more moisturizer you apply into the color, the more pliable it will stay. Don't use too much though, because it will take forever to dry. Remember to color your ears too! Once the color is all over your face- dust it all with translucent powder.

That's the trick to getting a good pale face!

The rest is explained in the video, but here's the product list of what's on my face. ALL products were purchased by me!

Face:

White Smudge-Proof Cream Makeup from Spirit Halloween
Too Faced Magic Wand Illumination Foundation in London Fair
Nivea Soft Moisturizing Cream
High Definition Powder from E.L.F. (translucent)

Wet 'N Wild MegaLength Mascara

Get the Look - Jack-O-Lantern Halloween Fun

I love pumpkins. I love trick-or-treating.
Yes, I know I'm nearly 30..... But I don't act it. If I could walk around this year- you betcha I'd be collecting free candy! Everyone always thinks I'm a teenager anyways... hahahaha.... Reeses Peanut butter cups are my favorite!!!

Ok, before I get totally side-tracked, I'll try to stay on course. Up this day is a Halloween inspired eye- of course! It's only a few days- and All Hallows Eve is upon us! What better way to show how much you like the season than a sexy black and orange eye. Yes, you read it right. Orange on your eyes. For real?!
[nods yes]

I'd have to say I have the fondest memories of being a kid and going to pick out a pumpkin each year at the local pumpkin patch. The hayrides were my favorite part, and I always got to watch my brother and sisters to make sure they stayed close. And not get a pumpkin like mine. I would always pick out the one that was a little crooked, funny, not perfect. Mom liked the round and nice looking ones. My brother always picked the biggest one he could carry. And my sisters, well, they were fans of symmetrical too. I always liked the ones that weren't quite like the others.

For this creepy Jack-O-Lantern inspired look, I've used Moi Minerals Cosmetics Haunted House collection of mineral eye shadows. The colors are: Bark at the Moon (white), Black Cat (black with gold sparks), Headless Horseman (bright orange with pink undertones), and Goblin (color shifter blue/green). I did, of course, prime my eyes before applying the shadows dry. For a more intense look- you can certainly foil the colors when you put them on.

Additionally on my face is:

Too Faced Magic Wand Illuminating Foundation in London Fair
Physicians Formula: Organics Mineral Foundation in Translucent
E.L.F. Complexion Perfection quad to brighten and neutralize reds, blues and grays in face
E.L.F. All Over Color Stick applied under my eyes in Apricot Beige
E.L.F. Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Black
Wet 'N Wild Black Kohl Eyeliner, and MegaLength Mascara
Orglamix mineral eye-shadow in Red Currant, applied as blush

Lips:
Ulta double ended lipliner in Nude/Berry
E.L.F. Lipstick in Candlelight

Taaaa-daaaaaaa!!!!!!!
Hope you have a spooky week my lovelies- and be on the lookout for local ghouls!

Thank you awesome friends for coming by..... [cackle]

Get the Look - Witches Brew, For Me and For You!

It's that time of year... The little ghosts and goblins are out running around, and I can't help but ogle hand made and homemade costumes for the little ones. But just as much fun is when parents dress up too. And if you don't have kids, and you're like me... Halloween is an excuse to don some outrageous gear and call yourself something for the costume contest.... Right?? Yeah, I thought so!

Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble!

Add some frogs legs, eyes of newt, fresh algae, and some crushed pearls along with some soot..... And we've got a delicious (and thankfully fictional!!) Witches Brew!

Oh wait, not an actual drink... But a play on colors which will adorn your eyes and draw attention to you!! You don't need to use the exact colors I've put on my eyes- and any shadows will do as long as you have the following:

Yes, I'm doing silly "duck lips" for some reason...
Dark gray-black.
Medium green- as in a hunter green, or dark moss.
Light green- as in lichen, or glow-sticks that children run around with.
Highlight color in a shimmery white.

Mix together... And we've got some awesome deviance going on girls!
Want to see how to mix together? Watch below!

So now, with this look.... I'd have to say you're guaranteed to be the sexiest little witch in town! So go on.... Gather up some ghoul friends and paint the town.... GREEN!

What's on my face:

Eyes:

Moi Minerals Cosmetics
Eyelid Primer

Mineral eye shadows in:
Black Magic
Evergreen (matte)
Snap (electric green)
Shimmers & Pearls

Wet 'N Wild Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Black
E.L.F. Waterproof Liquid Liner
Wet 'N Wild MegaLength Mascara in Black

Face:

Nivea Soft Moisturizing Cream
E.L.F. All Over Color Stick in Apricot Beige (under eyes, nose)
E.L.F. Complexion Perfection (touch up redness)
Physicians Formula: Organics Mineral Foundation in Translucent

Orglamix Cosmetics
Mineral eye shadow Red Currant used as blush.

E.L.F. Lip Shimmers Lip Gloss in Candlelight

There you have it! A beautiful sexy witch outfit in no time flat! Now, of course, if you wanted to make this look a bit more dramatic... Feel free to pick out a beautiful red lipstick to accentuate your lips. This will really bring the entire look from "pretty" to "pretty dang awesome"!

As always, thank you for coming by!

Have a bewitching week!!

Get the Look - My Wicked Ways Halloween Request

I'm anxiously awaiting this video to upload to YouTube. Not much longer, and it'll be live! So I'll cool my heels and give you a little background on this one. (No, still haven't figured out what's going on with the weird purple fade video yet, but I will!)

This was a requested look by one of my fantabulous YouTube subscribers, and I have to admit... I had a lot of fun thinking about what I'd have to do to come up with something that would impress. AngelHoney08- this is for you! Since it wasn't exactly specified what kind of smokey eye was to be designed.... I kind of took artistic liberty and came up with this:

Yes. Smokey. Gothic. FUN! And bright!!!! The video and my pictures didn't quite capture the hot pinks like I had hoped... So this look, as much as you may think is intense now, is much brighter in person! So without any further ado- take a peek at the video:

Now I have to admit, I did get some new brushes from E.L.F. I'll post what I have later on, and links for you..... Seriously, if you want some professional brushes for pretty much Dollar Store prices... Yep, I'm serious! You can luck out and buy them as a set, and some of the freebie promos they run also get you some brushes. Ok ok ok, I digress.

This is one of my favorite color combinations to work with. Pinks, purples, and blacks- you can't ever go wrong with! I used all eye shadows from Moi Minerals Cosmetics in some great new colors she's just sent along for me to use, review, and swatch. (That's another story for perhaps tomorrow!) There are a few E.L.F. Cosmetics on my face as well. Want to know what? That's below!

On my face:

E.L.F. Cosmetics:

All Over Color Stick in Apricot Beige

Studio Complexion Perfection - disguises redness, yellow, red and blue undertones on your face.

Image from E.L.F. Cosmetics Website
A quick sidenote for color usage:
Yellow- neutralizes red, and brightens complexion
Blue- neutralizes orange
Pink- neutralizes gray
Green- neutralizes redness (perfect for blemishes)

High Definition Powder - Can I say new found Holy Grail in my stash?? Yes... I know, it's not 100% mineral. Notice how smooth and matte my face looks?? Yes- this is why! This is why it's given the a-ok.

Physicians Formula: Organics Mineral Foundation

Lips: L'Oreal lipcolor in Neverending Rose (Sorry Feline, I didn't realize I "stole" it from you! Found it in my bag!)

Eyes:

Moi Minerals:

Mineral Shadows in Psycho (contains carmine), Amethyst Lights, Wicked and Shimmer & Pearls (*)

E.L.F. Cosmetics:
Waterproof Eyeliner in Black

Wet 'N Wild Kohl Eyeliner in Black, and MegaLength Mascara in Black

(*) Cosmetics were given to me free of charge.

I have not been compensated by this company, or any others, for making this video or offering personal opinions. I'm just sharing the fun!

As always, thank you for stopping by!

Caramelized Caramel-Apple Upside-Down Cake

No, it's not a new look. While I did do a Caramel Candy Apple Eye Look, I actually baked this delicious cake last night. It's soooo good, I had to share it with everyone. The original recipe came from one I found on Food Network, I altered it a bit to suit my sweet tooth. Needless to say- since the apples come out super-sweet, the simple cake mixture that's added cuts the sweetness and it all comes together perfectly!

I should also point out that while baking, this cake makes your house smell absolutely delectable! I was drooling and wanted to forego dinner last night, in favor of just eating this! It comes together rather quickly- so if you need a delicious dessert in a pinch, you've got it!

I'll take a picture of it in a while... Unless we eat the rest of it today, and in that case... I'll just have to make another one!

Caramelized Caramel-Apple Upside-Down Cake

4 Tbs Unsalted Butter (1/2 a stick)
1/4 c Buttershots (Butterscotch Liqueur)
1/2 c firmly packed Brown Sugar (light or dark)
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
Dash of Nutmeg (I freshly ground mine)
2 1/2 - 3 c Thinly Sliced Apples (Macintosh, Cortland, Gala, etc.)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 9 inch cake pan. You can use butter, Crisco, or Pam cooking spray.

In small saucepan, melt together the butter, butterscotch liqueur, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Boil for 30 seconds and remove from heat. In greased cake pan, spread apple slices evenly across and drizzle the sugar mixture to coat apples. Set aside.

Cake:
6 Tbs Unsalted Butter, softened
1 c Granulated Sugar
2 Eggs, room temperature
1 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 c Regular Flour
3 Tbs Cornmeal
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Salt
Dash of Nutmeg
1/2 cup Whole Milk
4 Tbs Buttershots (Butterscotch Liqueur)

In large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until mixed well. Add eggs and vanilla extract, and beat on med-high speed until light and fluffy- about 2 minutes.Slowly add flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Mix until well blended. Pour in milk and buttershots, and mix until moistened and batter has a smooth consistency- about one minute. Spoon mixture over apples, and smooth the batter over the top of the fruit.

Bake 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the middle of the cake comes out dry. Remove from oven and let sit approximately 5 minutes. Run knife across edges of the pan to release cake, put a plate, platter or cookie sheet with sides on top of cake. Flip upside-down and release cake from pan. There will be a delicious syrup that will come out from the apples- you can use a flat metal spatula to gather up the extra and put back on top of the cake. Let cool, and serve warm with vanilla ice cream. It can also be cooled completely before serving.

Enjoy!

Starting to Get To Work... Halloween Costume!

I'm anticipating that I won't be able to stay out very long for Halloween, but while I'm there... I'm going to make it well worthwhile and enjoy every minute I can. What am I going to be? Well, that's a good question. I'm not quite sure myself. But I'll show you the pieces!

This is the dress I have, Ivory Brocade by Lip Service. It can be worn with the bustle in the back, or letting the ties out and having the train sweep behind me:

Second item would only be visible if I lift up the skirts to show you- one of my all time favorite things to wear- stripey tights!!!
Tights from Hot Topic

Now, this would totally look gorgeous with a pair of black shoes I have... But unless my back somehow miraculously strengthens, I think my shoes for the evening are going to be black flats.

My hair will be wild. My makeup... Surprising. I'm not going to tell you any more... But take a peek at this video below to see how some of my face will be made up... Not the entire thing, of course!

My final look won't end up being ALL gore and guts... And not as dark as I can imagine you're presuming it will be ;) You'll have to stay tuned in to see WHAT exactly I am!

What are YOU going out as this All Hallows Eve?
Happy Haunting!

Get the Look - Purple Fade for Amanda

Purple. A color that can be really great on the eyes... Yet, at the same time, a color that many ladies are apprehensive to play with or wear. Sure- there's a whole spectrum out there- from light lavender, to bright neon purple, to deep berry tones- and every kind of shade in between. The key is to jump in- be fearless!

I created this look as a request from Amanda on my Facebook Page wanting to know how to use purples in a subdued tone on the eyes. She's getting married, and wanted good ideas for purple tones on her eyes. Congratulations to you and your husband-to-be!

I'm happy to report that I came up with three different looks for this one. Of course- I totally forgot to take pictures of the not-so-subdued look before I went ahead and lightened it. [sighs] I blame it on my blonde roots. I seriously do have these moments I just totally and completely blank... And... Aye. At least I'm not as bad as a few months ago!

Ok, we're past that. I did the look a few different ways to show options. Yes, I broke out my wild and bright purple shade in Panic from Moi Minerals Cosmetics and on my eyes it went. The point? You can always tone down a color if it's too bright. You can lighten a color if it's too dark. Please don't think that the color in the jar or pan is what you're stuck with! There are so many options to play- blend the colors, mix in lighter or darker ones, blend blend blend, add another tone.... The possibilities are endless.

My ace up the sleeve with this look was a translucent, sparkling gray shadow Storm from Orglamix Cosmetics which is packed with plennnnnty of sparkles. Why gray? For one- it can be a light layer. Or pack it on for a thicker color. Or foil the color to wear it just as gray. Limitless options I tell you!

On my Face:
Too Faced Magic Wand Illuminating Foundation in London Fair. (I wanted more coverage today!)
PF Organics Mineral Foundation.

On my Eyes:

Orglamix Cosmetics Eye Shadow Colors in Orchid (very, very light purple), Storm (gray) and Vanilla Birthday Cake.
Magnetism Eye-Primer

Moi Minerals Cosmetics Eye Shadow Color in Panic!

Wet 'N Wild Gel Eyeliner in Black, MegaLength Mascara in Black, and Black & White Kohl Eyeliner
Nude Lip Pencil by Ulta
Sally Hansen Satin Effects Lip Gloss in Delightful

And that's all it took to bring this look together!
The video takes so long... You guessed it, because I tend to gab! It's really tough to talk and apply makeup... LOL!

Thanks for stopping by, and as always- be happy!
